How does Excellence in Spelling work?

1. Watch the introductory DVD.
Parents first watch a "Introduction to the Phonetic Zoo" found on the "Spelling and the Brain DVD" which describes how the mind works to develop spelling skills and shows the "how to" of the Phonetic Zoo.

2. Present the rule.
Using the Phonetic Zoo flashcards, present the first rule to your student. Read the rule out loud from the back of the card and have the child read and spell out loud the three words. Discuss how the animal name illustrates the rule of the lesson.

3. Present a rule card.
Give your child the small zoo card. This card provides both a reminder of the rule and a motivational tool as children collect cards when they progress through
the lessons.

4. Have your student listen to the first lesson.
The child can listen to the introductory comments and the first lesson. Each lesson is less than 10 minutes long.

5. Have your child correct his or her work.
The CD will spell the words for your child at the end of the lesson. Your child may also check them against the rule card.

6. Do a Personal Spelling lesson.
Every fifth lesson is a Personal Spelling lesson. The flashcards for these lessons
have 15 blank spaces for which to record your student's misspelled words from writing handed in to you.

7. Take a final exam.
After completing all 47 lessons a comprehensive exam is taken.

The All About Spelling program is multisensory, and the Basic Interactive Kit contains components that enable your child to learn through sight, sound, and touch. The kit contains: Letter Tiles. Magnets, Phonogram CD-ROM that provides an easy way to learn the sounds of the basic phonograms, and twelve sturdy Divider Cards to organize your flash cards

Basic Interactive Kit is necessary for program implementation.
Level 1 helps your child build a strong foundation for spelling. Your child will learn the sounds of the first 32 phonograms (a letter or letter combination). Next, your child will learn how to hear each individual sound in a word, how to represent each of those sounds with a phonogram, and how to apply basic spelling rules. The main focus of Level 1 is to get children comfortable and proficient with spelling short vowel words.

Four sets of flashcards help your student learn and review phonograms, words, and spelling rules. Five colored tokens are included to provide your student with a tactile way to segment words and identify individual sounds. A progress chart and completion certificate allow you to track and celebrate your student’s success.
Level 2 continues to teach reliable spelling rules and generalizations. Word Banks are introduced in Level 2 to help visual memory of words with a particular sound so the student can successfully choose the correct spelling when he is faced with multiple spellings of a sound.

The Level 2 Material Packet contains four sets of flashcards tailored to the lessons in the Teacher's Manual, allowing you to review and help your child master the new concepts.
You also receive:

   • Syllable Tags
   • Syllable Division Rules Chart
   • Word Banks
   • A Jail for Rule
   • And more!
Level 3 introduces Word Sorts and Word Analysis activities. The Writing Station gives your child a creative outlet for applying new knowledge to original sentences. As in previous levels, the built-in review system and reinforcement activities help your child practice important concepts until they are mastered.

The Level 3 Student Material Packet includes four types of flashcards for review purposes plus:

   • Silent E Book
   • Homophones List
   • Suffix Tiles
   • A progress chart and completion certificate that allow you to track and celebrate your student’s success
